Lucy C. Gans

Professor and Louis and Jane P. Weinstock Chair in Art and Architecture

Lucy Gans is a professor of art in the Department of Art, Architecture and Design and the first holder of the Louis & Jane Weinstock ’36 Chair of Art and Architecture at Lehigh University. She teaches sculpture and drawing and is also an affiliated faculty member in the Women Gender and Sexuality Studies Program.  Her work is figurative, narrative and socially situated and ranges from individually carved figures to installations with cast objects, prints and narrative text.  Her exhibition, "In Our Own Words," at Zoellner Center for the Arts’ Gallery, Lehigh University, was composed of over 400 ceramic heads, eight looping audio tracks and accompanying text. The subject was Domestic Violence and the audio component was culled from interviews with survivors; the exhibition received a special award from the Fine Arts Commission for Social Impact.  Her work is in many public and private collections in this country and abroad and she has been the recipient of the National Association of Women Artists, Medal of Honor, the Peabody award  for her work in printmaking and the Clara Shainless Memorial Award. She earned her MFA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, in sculpture with Calvin Albert and Robert Zakarian with a minor in drawing with George McNeil. She also studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League, NY, NY, with Bruce Dorfman. She earned her BFA from Lake Erie College, Painesville, OH. She has taught in schools, colleges and universities in Ohio, New York, Alabama and Pennsylvania for over 35 years. Gans came to Lehigh as an assistant professor in 1981 and was tenured in 1987, and promoted to full professor in 1999. She chaired the department from 1987-90, 2003-04, 2006, and from 2010 to 2016. She directed the Women’s Studies Program from 1991-1994 and directed the Design Arts Program from 2008-09.
